Character Name: Kevin Prentiss
Series: Rachel Caine's Weather Warden series
Age: 16-17
From When?: Kevin will be coming from shortly before the end of Heat Stroke.
Inmate/Warden: Kevin is definitely an inmate. He has massive trust issues as is typical for abuse victims. People, in general, terrify him. He also tends to act without comprehending the consequences of his actions which is not surprising, given his age. Unfortunately, his powers make this a major problem. His self-esteem is almost nonexistent. Not only does he not see why he should help people, he doesn't believe he can. On top of everything else, his sense of right and wrong been badly skewed by living with his abusive and murderous stepmother. Working with a Warden would first of all give him the opportunity to have someone he could trust, who would consistently be there for him and treat him with normal, human decency while still imposing limits and holding him to a standard of behavior.
Abilities/Powers: pyrokinesis
Personality: In terms of behavior, Kevin has perfected the act of the tough, careless punk. Outwardly, he doesn't let anything case him. He's prone to picking fights and lashing out when he feels vulnerable. And don't bother suggesting that he help anyone because, as he puts it, they never helped him.
Underneath his tough, angry exterior, Kevin is a hurting, badly traumatized child. At one point, the vulnerability he displays is described as the cry of a child too young to understand what is being done to him or why he's being hurt. He's lonely, terrified, and confused. He doesn't trust anyone he can't control. He's a boy who has been sadistically raped for years but has never been hugged, never kissed, never shown any kind of affection. His self-esteem is virtually nonexistent. His one overarching motive is to get away from Yvette and to make sure no one will ever hurt him again.
Kevin has a fairly short attention span and the patience of a toddler. He constantly wants to be entertained. Preferably with a large screen TV, some action movies, and all the porn channels known to man.
He has killed before, once by accident and then at his stepmother's command. When called upon to kill, he waits, blending into the background until his victim is sufficiently distracted for him to make a blitz attack. And he does it without any outward sign of how he feels about it. That doesn't mean he likes killing people. He doesn't. It simply means he didn't have a choice and he won't apologize for what he had to do.
He buries his feelings as much as he can to avoid giving anyone that advantage over him. He'll pretend he doesn't care about anything or anyone because it's the only way he has to protect himself. It is difficult to get any real reactions out of him. Most of what you see of him, the mouthy, cocky, pain-in-your-ass teenager, is an act. This falls whenever he's enraged or scared.
He has very poor impulse control. If he thinks of something, he does it without thinking things through. He has little to no concept of the consequences of his actions, including with regards to himself. At this point, he entirely self-centered. He views the entire world as having abandoned him at best or out right abused him at worst.
He lashes out at almost everyone. When he's angry, this usually involves randomly kicking or punching the most convenient target like a young child throwing a tantrum. When he's scared, he becomes much more lethal. His attacks then are no longer aimless but deliberate attempts to kill the perceived threat before he can be hurt again.
On the rare occasion that he let's you see the real boy under the facade, the fear, and the rage, he acts like a little boy no more than around nine or ten. He's insecure, lonely, overwhelmed, and confused by the abuse he's received from his stepmother. The abuse has been so terrifying and confusing for him that, when asked, he can't even explain what's been done to him. He's been mostly isolated from the rest of the world and has no concept of how other people relate outside of what he's seen in movies. He wants protection. Despite his father's death being accidental, he expects punishment for it. He has no idea what to do with the guilt he feels over that so he tries to mostly pretend it doesn't exist. He also wants a friend but has no concept of how to gain a friend or how to be one. When given any form of physical affection, whether a hug or a chaste kiss, he doesn't know how to respond because it's so far out of his realm of experience. Chances are that, if he's receiving affection from a woman, he'll eventually grope her. He's also incredibly cling once he trusts someone. Cling in the sense of a small child with a security blanket.
It's fairly rare, but Kevin can be extremely vindictive. That side of him is reserved for his abusers and anyone who betrays his trust. The simple reasoning is that he wants them to suffer the way they made him suffer.
He wants power. Power to protect himself, power to keep other people away from him, power for he barely understands what anymore, just so long as he has it and is no longer helpless. If he finds out someone is dependent on him he tends to gloat. A lot of that is about the power. It's a rush for him. But underneath that, there is a tiny piece of him that recognizes that he wants to be more than some kid who kills people, more than a victim. Although at this point in his life, he'd deny it with his dying breath, he wants to help people like his powers are meant for. He couldn't tell you why. It's not even something he's consciously aware of. He certainly doesn't believe he can help anyone. But that part of him has not completely died yet.
There's also part of him that aches for someone to step into the role of a father. It's not something he's aware of at all but it's there and it makes him easier to manipulate. At least for a man. Even more so if he thinks he is the one in control.
Barge Reactions: Kevin will not react well to the Barge at first. Most likely, he'll interpret the Barge as solely a punishment rather than an opportunity. He will be lashing out in both fear and anger at pretty much everyone. As he begins to settle in, he will start to form tentative bonds with people he respects and a few people he finds that he actually likes. Fandom, genre, and character type won't matter to him much. Floods and breaches, however, will scare him, at least until he gets used to them happening. This will be true of some types of breaches more than others.
Path to Redemption: Kevin's primary triggers are comments about his appearance, especially along the lines of “you'd be handsome if you'd cut your hair.” They're too similar to things his stepmother used to say to him. Any kind of discipline will also likely be a trigger for him as he will probably perceive it as an attack. The biggest way to motivate him to change is to show him that he can help people, that he can change, and that there's a point to it other than not getting hurt. The best method I can think of to get through to him is to become the loving, patient parent he barely remembers having. Also, a man would probably have an easier time getting through to Kevin. His memories of his father are mostly good whereas his stepmother sexually abused him.
History: Kevin is approximately sixteen years old. We don't know what happened to his birth mother beyond the fact that she died. Quite possibly she was murdered by the woman who became Kevin's stepmother. Whatever the case, Kevin ends up living with his father and his stepmother, Yvette. Those fairytale stepmothers, like in Cinderella? Yvette makes them look like the kindest people you've ever met. When Kevin was still very young, either right before or during puberty, Yvette began to severely sexually abuse him. In fact, this was how Kevin was discovered as a powerful Fire Warden. Shocked and traumatized by the abuse, he set the house on fire, accidentally killing his father. He has watched, and often been forced to participate, as Yvette has manipulated and seduced her way around the male Wardens in the US, stealing their Djinn and killing them.
The one exception to this was Bad Bob, the State Warden for Florida. The two of them had similar tastes and Bad Bob often loaned Yvette the use of his Djinn, David. They kept Kevin in line with threats of the World Wardens Council killing him for being to powerful and Bad Bob's promise of protection. Kevin, having been almost completely isolated since his father's death, has no reason to question any of this.
When Kevin was sixteen, he went with Yvette to collect a new Djinn from Patrick, a free Djinn she had made a deal with. Unexpectedly, they found Lewis, the most powerful Warden alive, there, with a newly-formed Djinn, Joanne. Seeing Joanna as a means to lure her maker/lover, Yvette briefly seduced Lewis, allowing Kevin to savagely beat the more powerful Warden, and takes Joanne's Djinn bottle. More significantly, Yvette gives the bottle, and therefore ownership and control of Joanne, to Kevin. For the abused teenager, this is his first real taste of power, his first opportunity to try to get free of his stepmother. As soon as he was alone, he couldn't resist the urge to see his Djinn and tentatively explore her powers. Before they could talk for more than a few minutes, however, Yvette showed up, demanding that he send Joanne to destroy a small town in New England. This successfully lured Joanne's lover. As soon as Yvette claimed this Djinn, she
left Kevin alone with Joanne. At this point, Kevin first revealed the conflicted, desperate emotions he spent most of his time hiding. While he initially ordered Joanne not to harm Yvette, he now told her to kill his stepmother so she would no longer "make him do bad things." However, he quickly settled for simply sending Joanne to spy on her.
When Joanne returned hurt, he gloated about her needing him to heal herself. However when Yvette and David, Joanne's lover, came, he ordered her to heal herself and protect him, culminating in her taking him to safety. There, he revealed further how damaged he was, the terror he had of Yvette, his loneliness, and even a last shred of innocence. Joanne comforted him then forced him into a deep sleep while she left to save the world. Kevin resented her manipulation when he woke but sent her to stop a massive storm heading their way at her request. He called her back before she finished but she delayed until the storm was under control. When she finally did return, he was gone and all the highest members of the World Council were dead or unconscious. She found him in the Djinn vault, captured by Yvette and Jonathan, the very first Djinn. Jonathan snapped his neck, leaving him all but dead while the one Warden left standing struggled to keep him alive.
Sample Journal Entry: This is bullshit. Mom makes her new toy kill me and I'm the one on the prison ship?! It's not fair! I want to go home and I want her dead. And I want my Djinn back. I hate this place!
Sample RP: Kevin sat up slowly, his hand drifting to his neck. Something here didn't make sense. He should be dead. He knew it. Mom... No, Yvette, the bitch didn't deserve that title, especially now. Yvette had finally done it. She'd used her Djinn to kill him. And Joanne hadn't come when he called her. He wasn't sure how she'd done it since she was his Djinn, bound to obey him. Not that it mattered. She'd found a way to betray and abandon him.
He punched the wall next to him angrily. So much for trusting people. If he hadn't trusted her, maybe Yvette wouldn't have hurt him this bad. Damn bitch.
Except... He wasn't dead somehow. He could definitely feel the bunk under him and his hand hurt from slamming his fist into the wall. And if he wasn't dead, where was he? He surged to his feet, running into the hall, trying to see if there was any way to figure out what the hell was going on.
Special Notes: Not that I can think of.

Revisions
Date: 2012-11-09 09:27 pm (UTC)Revised First Person Sample: [Several pages have been torn from the book, the evidence being the rough edges of the pages left behind where Kevin had ripped them out in a fit of rage. The handwriting is barely legible, looking more like a child's handwriting than a teenager's. The pen has pressed creases into the paper from how hard Kevin pressed as he wrote.] This is bullshit. Mom makes her new toy kill me and I'm the one on the prison ship?! It's not fair! Why isn't she here instead? [Here the writing comes in large, block letters.] I DON'T NEED A SECOND CHANCE!
[He leaves several lines blank. In fact, it looks as if he stopped, walked away from the notebook, and then came back some time later.] I want to go home and I want her dead. And I want my Djinn back -- as a Djinn, not suddenly human. I want her to know what it's like to be abandoned by the one person I thought I could trust. And my powers don't work right here. I hate this place!
Revisions for re-app part 1
Date: 2015-11-20 02:43 am (UTC)From when?: He will be coming post-graduation, from after a warden retirement taking place after the end of the series.
Inmate/Warden: Kevin graduated last time he was here and will now be a warden. He has a lot of compassion, even if he often doesn't make noticeable displays of it. He also knows how to hold his ground. He's young and not as experienced as some but he makes up for it in dedication and determination.
Abilities/Powers: pyrokinesis, weather powers
Item: electronic tablet
Personality: Kevin can still be violent if he feels the situation calls for it however he now tries to avoid killing whenever possible. While he may still use surprise attacks, he will now also meet people head on. He is a lot less prone to lashing out now. Often, if he does, it will be to protect someone else. Between his time in his own world immediately following his graduation and his time after he left the Barge as a warden, he's grown to be very protective of those he considers family and those he considers helpless or innocents. He is, in general, much more open about his feelings. He can still put a mask on or make it seem as if his feelings are about something else but it is no longer his day to day habit. He can be a bit of a well-meaning brat at times, always ready with some snark or a prank.
Barge Reactions: As a returnee, Kevin will be familiar with the dynamics and general insanity of the Barge. He will be looking to reconnect with his friends from last time who are still around and look after any inmates who need help, especially those with no permanent warden.
Deal: Cherise's and Thomas's safety
Revisions for re-app part 2
Date: 2015-11-20 03:24 am (UTC)Now back home, he claimed Jonathan's bottle that had been let fall and ordered the Djinn to defeat Yvette and give him her weather powers until she reformed. While he intended to give them back if she ever changed for the better, this was never to happen. He then told Jonathan to take him to Las Vegas before he broke the bottle, freeing the Djinn. There he met Siobhan, a teenaged prostitute. He took her under his wing, working to find a way to get her safely out while building her a new life. Unfortunately, they ran afoul of a dirty cop who turned out to also have worked with Yvette smuggling Djinn on the black market. Joanne and her friends came to Vegas for other reasons but quickly became drawn in. Ultimately, the cop killed Siobhan just before they captured him and handed him over to the police. Afterward, Kevin left with Lewis to learn more about being a Warden and how to use his new weather powers without creating inadvertently causing massive damage to the climate.
Some months later, Kevin and Lewis sought out Joanne after an attack that left Kevin badly injured. David healed him nearly at the cost of his own life, speeding the process of becoming an Ifrit. It turned out that the Wardens who had attacked them all had demon marks and were continuing Bad Bob and Yvette's plans as a group of Djinn began to turn on Wardens. Kevin stole David's bottle at the now Ifrit's request to give Joanne's powers a chance to rebuild at the cost of his own, giving it back only when neither his nor Joanne's powers were enough to hold David in Djinn form. Later, he learned that Jonathan sacrificed himself to restore David as a Djinn and allow the birth of David and Joanne's daughter as Mother Nature started to wake.
It was during this fiasco that Kevin first met Cherise, just a normal, twenty-two-year-old with no powers. While Kevin had dated Stephanie on the Barge, he no longer knew if he would ever see her again. The attraction between Cherise and Kevin was instant and mutual. It wasn't long before they started dating. He enjoyed showing her what he could do with his powers. She enjoyed watching. As the Warden on Djinn on Djinn fighting went on, they both went with Joanne to help however they could until Kevin was sent to help put out a forest fire and took Cherise with him.
Despite hatching Demon Marks and an angry Djinn noble, Joanne manages to speak to the Earth Oracle and, through her, Mother Nature. As she leaves from convincing Mother Nature not to destroy humanity, the Djinn noble rips away her history, attempting to unmake her and leaving her completely amnesiac. Lewis managed to get her to safety. Meanwhile, one of the newly hatched demons found both Kevin and Cherise and possessed them both, using Cherise to toy with Kevin. Using both of their bodies, she stalked other Wardens and drained their life force before finally killing them. The demon forced them to attack Joanne and Lewis. The resulting fight drove the demon out of them as it tried to possess Joanne. When Kevin found the two again, he fought them, thinking they had harmed his girlfriend. Once he saw that Cherise was safe and well, he told how the demon had found them and he had tried to fight it off. The demon had left them both with extensive but subtly lethal brain damage. Joanne healed Cherise but Kevin refused to let anyone mess with his mind. Once they returned to the Warden Council, Kevin was forcibly taken to the Warden's medical center.
After Kevin was healed, Joanne seemed to return to her normal self. Unbeknown to Kevin and most other Wardens, however, this was not truly Joanne but the demon who had found her memories and learned to take her physical form. Lewis brought both Kevin and Cherise to real Joanne in hopes that their memories from being possessed would provide a lead to track and defeat the demon. Kevin's memories did, indeed, contain the key to finding the demon and stopping her plans. They returned together to New England to fight the demon one last time. He provided what backup he could as the demon attempted to first kill and then possess Joanne, bringing back the fresh memories of his own time at her mercy. Finally David ended the fight by feeding her another demon, causing both demons to mutually destroy each other.
Kevin spent the next year dating Cherise and working on Fire Warden business while Lewis, Joanne, and some others restored the Warden Council. He came back from traveling the country to help Lewis enforce Joanne's recovery after a terrorist attack by making an artificial beach on the roof of the Warden hospital. Meanwhile they had the problem of a Djinn killed by antimatter that the Djinn could not identify as once a Djinn let alone remember who that Djinn had once been. At the Council meeting after Joanne recovered enough to leave the hospital, they learned that a manifesto and letter claiming credit had been left in Joanne's mailbox by a group calling themselves the Sentinels. They had already approached Kevin about joining them. Although he had initially put off the decision so as to leave the contact open, Joanne asked him to accept and to spy on them. She sent a Djinn named Rahel with him to impersonate Cherise and function as his backup should anything go wrong. They decided to use David and Joanne's engagement announcement to set up his apparent defection from the Wardens. The staged defection brought up the worst of his past, his abuse at Yvette's hands and her involvement of her Djinn in that. It seemed to go well until he found himself chased down by two of the Sentinels. One of the high level Wardens had been feeding information to the Sentinels, including Kevin's status as spy. Kevin refused to let Rahel take him to safety since the Sentinels had threatened to kill a girl if they left. This gave them the chance to capture Rahel with chords of antimatter. Kevin ran for help, meeting Jo before he even left the building. They were unable to rescue Rahel or another captured Djinn but they did learn that the Sentinels were led by Bad Bob returned or, rather, a demon with his form and memories. Lewis arrived with backup in time to fight their way out successfully. All Kevin was able to learn was the Sentinels' plan to capture David and torture him to learn how to destroy all Djinn and Oracles.
Not long after, Kevin was asked to be at David and Joanne's wedding. With how public it was, the Sentinels took the opportunity to attack. While the Wardens won the fightm Bad Bob used the couples vows as a means of reenslaving several of the Djinn, including Rahel. He also found a way through one of the Djinn holy books to enslave Joanne as if she was a Djinn before leaving for the Bermuda Triangle. Kevin joined the team Lewis put together to accompany Joanne to kill Bad Bob with Cherise accompanying him. On the trip, Joanne began to increasingly fall under the demon's control and their means of stopping it grew less and less effective. Kevin was assigned a subteam to fight off skins, beings made of demonic crystal covered in the skin of a recently deceased human. It gave him a front row seat to Joanne's final loss of control. She took control of the ship, taunting both Kevin and Cherise. Kevin managed to hold his own but it was Cherise who managed to briefly talk her down. Joanne destroyed the ship but managed to hold back from drowning the life boats. Kevin ended up with David's bottle and entrusted to never let him out should Joanne die right before she jumped off a lifeboat to go face Bad Bob the demon. Instead, Kevin gave the bottle to Cherise who let David out long enough to arrange to save Joanne's life. Together, they manage to destroy both the demon and the antimatter but in doing so they damaged the earth badly, waking Mother Nature, and were separated from their powers which went to the next closest people, Kevin and Cherise.
Mother Nature waking meant that she took over all Djinn except David as he was rendered human due to the loss of his powers. Now that she'd been hurt once again, she lashed out at what, as far as she knew, had been the cause of her pain – humanity. Joanne decided to try to speak to Mother Nature directly one more times. Kevin, Cherise, and David decided to go with her. It meant that, as they travelled, they were struggling to help Cherise learn to control Joanne's powers without accidentally harming anyone. And they were fighting Djinn to survive long enough to get there. Kevin, thanks to David's powers, was the one to speak to the Fire Oracle along with David. While that did nothing to deter Mother Nature from killing humanity, it did return David's powers. Which left them with no choice but to continue to the Earth Oracle. On the way, they found a murdered family with one surviving child, a toddler. Kevin was the one to insist they had to bring the boy with them and to stop Cherise giving the child some bad choices in baby names before naming the baby himself. That night, Rahel showed up, still controlled but Mother Nature. Kevin attacked her, trying to protect the others. The resulting fight killed him.
Instead of fully moving on, he chose to return to the Barge, never to return to his own world. He made a deal to protect Cherise and the toddler but ended up leaving the Barge before he could complete it. He joined his own warden and his family in their new world, gradually building a life for himself there for two years before deciding to return to the Barge to complete his deal.

Date: 2015-11-22 04:55 am (UTC)Learning to care about other people and make friends has led to him wanting to protect those friends. When he does get violent now, this is generally what brings it out. For instance, he attacked Joanne and Lewis after the demon was forced out of him because it was all he could think to do after having failed to protect Cherise and the other victims the demon had forced him to help kill. If he could not protect Cherise, the only thing he could think to do was to stop the people who he believed had killed her. Perhaps more significant is how he ran into a battle he knew he could not win with Rahel in a desperate attempt to protect his girlfriend, their travel companions, and an orphaned toddler.
With learning that at least some people can be trusted, Kevin has stopped pretending to be unfeeling. He shows when he's happy or scared. He talks about people he cares about. Instead of being constantly sullen and withdrawn, he lets his sense of humor show and sometimes pranks other people. He enjoys snarking at people, especially if there's no hostility involved. However he has not lost the ability to hide his true feelings. He hid everything else under his anger to go undercover with the Sentinels and only was found out because he was betrayed. This is not to say he's a completely open book most times. He still covers for his discomfort in a situation with brashness or snark. He still has his times of withdrawing sullenly. But they are far less frequent and growing less so.
